10 Reasons Why Cats Make the Best Pets
92This is dedicated to my lovely big boy, Joe. He was rescued from a garden in Barking, London, after his owner died and her family left him in the garden to survive on his own when they sold her house. He lived in the garden for four months, in the cold, rain and wind with no shelter. The Chestnut Cat Sanctuary took him in after a neighbour brought him there. He had cuts to his ears where he had been attacked by other cats. The sanctuary fed and watered him, they really are an extraordinary charity who give cats a second chance at life, then a month later, we came to the sanctuary and adopted him to come and live with us. He is the best pet and the best friend a girl could ever have.

1. Independence
If you are at work full time like me, it is difficult to own a dog because it would be unfair on them to be left alone all day. That is the great thing about cats; they don’t need your constant attention. If you’ve got a cat door (flap) you can just leave the house in the morning and a cat will please his or herself until you get home. Depending on your cat’s preference they may like to spend their day inside your house, or if you have a cat like mine, he is dying to get out in the garden as soon as he wakes up in the morning. If you get a cat door that has adjustable locking mechanisms, you can choose whether to let your cat go out or indeed whether to let it in the house. These mechanisms are also great for stopping unwanted cats from coming into your house and eating your cat’s dinner!
2. Intelligence
Another great thing about cats is that they are very clever and after a while will learn your daily routine. Our cat Joe is always waiting for us in the garden when we get home or he comes running out of nowhere to greet us when he sees the car pull up; and he always knocking on our door at 7:30am asking for his breakfast, which means that he doubles up as a great alarm clock when you’ve accidentally forgotten to set yours! Cats also know the sights and sounds of when they are going to be fed, no matter where they are in the house, if they hear that cupboard door opening they are there in a flash. Joe has also recently learned how to open doors and can often be found lying in a pile of my handbags in the bottom of the wardrobe.
Depending on whether your cat spends more time with you or more time with other cats, they will begin to alter their body language and vocal communication to be more in tune with their surroundings. If you have recently bought a cat from a shelter and it is very vocal (meows constantly) it is likely that they have been an indoor cat previously that has learned that people use their mouths to communicate so is trying to do the same.
3. Cleanliness
Unlike other pets, cats don’t need a high degree of grooming. Unless you have a long haired cat, most cats will groom themselves and only require occasional brushing. Be sure that they have a good diet so that their coat stays glossy and make sure that they are wormed and protected against fleas. Cats are also naturally clean animals by their very nature which makes them good housemates, it also means that if you have a litter tray for your cat, it must be kept clean otherwise your cat will give you some very clear signs that he/she doesn’t want to use it.
4. Affectionate
Some people have a view that cats are aggressive and spiteful animals who only think of themselves. I have heard them referred to as the ‘teenager’ of the animal kingdom. Whilst it’s true that some cats, those who have had difficult lives for instance, can develop bad habits but if you give your cat affection, treat it with respect and ensure that it understands the boundaries of living in your home, it will give exactly the same back to you. You only get out of a cat what you put in. Most cats are affectionate, loving creatures who like nothing more than a warm place to sleep, which is often your lap, and a good cuddle (much like all of us!). If you ensure that you do the above, your cat will be the most loyal companion in your life.
5. Companionship
Just like dogs, cats can also be great companions. They will want to spend time with you and will thank you in purrs when you stroke them. In fact they purr even when they are near you. Cats get excited when you come home from being away or from work and sometimes want to chat with you (usually to tell you that their hungry).
6. Make a House a Home
Many people have previously said that having a cat makes a house a home. If you are alone they are a comfort to have around and they never moan about what you are watching on TV so long as they can nestle down in your lap to watch. They occupy certain places in the house where they like to sleep and they can turn what was a cold room into a welcoming place just by their very presence in it. They are unobtrusive, unlike dogs, but as soon as you own a cat the house won’t feel the same if they’re not there lying on your lap, on the radiator and sometimes in the wardrobe!
7. Affordable
No pet is cost free but healthy cats require relatively little routine medical intervention, equipment and their food can be quite cheap depending on what you buy. My advice would be not to buy a great deal more that the basics, cat litter tray, cat food and water bowl, scratching post and maybe a bed. Whenever I have bought, what look like exciting toys or cat treats, Joe has generally ignored them and preferred to play with the buttons on my jacket, or the tie strings on my bathrobe. He is also quite happy with ordinary wet and dry cat food and often turns his nose up at ‘treats’. All cats will be different but it’s best to start simple until you know your cat, their likes and dislikes.
8. Protective
If you’re a keen gardener like me one advantage to having a cat is that other cats will generally avoid entering your garden to use it as their own personal toilet. I tried for years to stop my neighbours’ cats from digging up my bedding plants or using my cherry slate as their litter tray. I tried orange peel, citrus sprays, high pitched sound devices, padding down the soil in my borders with mesh wiring, none of these things were as effective as owning a cat who will see your garden and his/her territory to protect.
9. Trainable
It’s not quite as easy as training a dog but you can train cats to do certain things. Most cats will be litter trained within their first three months, cats can be trained how to go through cat doors, how to open doors, not to sleep on your bed and claw your carpets. For really patient owners who have a lot of time on their hands, I have also heard that you can train a cat how to use a human toilet and flush it.......please let me know if any of you have managed this!
10. Fun
One of the most important things about owning a cat is they are fun to be with. Each cat will have its own little personality, likes and dislikes, and quirky behaviour. They will never bore you and will often do things to make you laugh like trying to eat your dinner or chasing spiders and flies. There are a range of toys that you and your cat can play with together – other than toggles on your clothes. They will jump over and sit on the most extraordinary and uncomfortable things just to be with you. They will find interesting and unlikely places to sleep and will all look adorable when they’re curled up asleep. If you do ever decide to buy a cat or are already a cat owner you’ll understand what I mean when I say you would be lost without them.

Buying a cat is one of the best things I've ever done. He is a sweet, heart-warming, loveable companion and I look forward to seeing him everyday. Not everybody has the same experience though which is why it...

Cats are great, I can't get mine to stop scratching furniture though!
And they are even more fun in pairs!
My uncle used to reckon it was the glue used in furniture carpets wall paper etc that sometimes drives cats mad to scratch
We are a cat family. We have traveled the world with our cats. I thought your hub was wonderful.
hmmm... very nice hub abbout cats .their interactive too and undeersatnd one's feeling...mine one even clasps her claws onto my shoulder and her legs just like a baby lol
So true!! I must admit, we got our cat mainly so the kids would stop nagging us, but I can't believe how quickly she has become part of our family. I can't imagine not having her around now, and as you say, her very presence makes the house seem no longer empty when the kids are at school, and it makes me feel so special when she chooses my lap to curl up in.
All great reasons for owning a cat Sarah! John looks like a cool dude, glad you took him in and gave him the run of the land, lol!
Agreed! That's funny, I just rescued a kitten from the road 2 days ago. Had to swerve out of the way of the little guy. He was walking down the highway for some strange reason. Even though your 10 reasons are spot on, I'll still probably end up giving it away to the shelter :(
I agree with you all the way! Kitties are awesome. Your boy Joe looks just like my boy Rocco. Very cute.
Lovely hub about cats! I have 1 feline companion now. Her name is Lucy. I agree with your hub 100%
Nice hub! We have eight pussy cats, one that we chose and the other seven chose us. There are two gingers, three short haired tabbies, one long haired tabby, one silver gray tabby and one black and white. They all have different personalities and bring us so much joy, it's a delight to see their little faces every day!
Cats are the best. We have four and they all have such different personalities. Our two older cats are still the most cheeky. They like their sleep, but when they are awake they storm around the house chasing each other as if they were still kittens. The other male cat just sits on the sofa and looks disapprovingly at them. Great pets.
I am answerung about the toilet flushing. My cat, Cookeie, flushes toilets all on her own. No one taught her. She just enjoys watching the water flush ;)
I love cats
I love cats! My cat is the cutest when he is curled up , asleep .I have to do an debate on whether Cats are better than dogs and this really helped! Now I know what to write!Thank you!
Cats are awesome. I've always been a cat person, and to tell the truth, dogs just disgust me when they try to lick me, and I've been attacked twice by dogs. A pitbull also attacked my mom once, and disfigured her a bit (he literally took a bite off her face). Dogs are evil, cats are gentle, soft and cute.
I've bought a cat a couple years ago, and couldn't ask for a better companion. I named him Walkie-Talkie, but usually call him only "Walkie". He's the best cat ever! =^_^=
Definitely a great hub on why cats are so great. I have always loved cats and for all the reason you have noted. they are so cuddly, just the right size, take very little to care for, relatively quiet, and they have the best personalities. We have three cats and all are so different. Love them all. Thanks for sharing this!
What a great hub. I have six cats and four were abandoned, and to this day I don't get why anyone could've thrown them away. Cats are fantastic animals and it's great to find people out there who love them, like me.
I just love cats! I love the fact they really have a personality and are not fond of everyone. You have to work for a cat to like you and in that way they are much more human than dogs. Our cat is just a little princess and I don't know one cat that purrs louder than she does. When it's quiet I can hear her from 10 feet.
I love my cats. The first cat I have is friendly but she likes her space. But the second, the little one treats me as though I was her own mom. She lays backward
in my arms like a baby, looks into my eyes and pats my cheek with her tiny little paw.
dat cew dow my dawg is a hater to dem cats
enjoyed reading your hub. My cat is a rehomed cat due to the fact he is very territorial and hardly tolerates other cats. Give him a human any time!
I like cats and dogs, but cats have the slightest edge for me because they won't jump all over your business clothes! We have a dog too and she is beautiful but I have to prepare myself to go out and talk to her because she is all over me, just a pup but she doesn't know her own strength. She's an American Bulldog and at six months is 14kgs. Our kitty, a Ragdoll, also a yankie breed, is soft and gentle and sits by me and on my lap. We nearly lost him; it came so close, and I was beside myself with grief. He is my baby. I love cats. And I like dogs very, very much too.
That is such an adorable kitty kat. I had two just like yours! One with black stripes named odie, (big boy with giant paws!) and a black cat named Mamba. Unfortunatly they both died over time, but I have a silver tabby named Cleo now and a long haired grey tortishell named Taz. I've always loved cats, ever since I was a child.

Great hub. Cats really are awesome creatures. It sickens me that the family of the previous owner left this poor soul out to fend for himself. Thank goodness for sanctuaries like Chestnut! I agree with all your points as to why cats make wonderful pets. Though I love dogs and all animals, cats most definitely rule!
Cats really do make the most perfect pets!
Thank you. As a cat I appreciate your ongoing support.
Cats are the best!
I have a 5 y/o rescue black kitty.
She's my best friend, and since I'm child-free, she is kind of like my baby. :)
She greets me at the door when I come home, always wants to play, snuggles with me to sleep, and even takes snuggly naps with me if I have a migraine.
She makes me laugh, and smile every day. I love how verbal she's become. She even paws at or chews the specific toy she wants to play with.
Sometimes, during playtime, if I get up and walk away to turn off tea water or something, she'll come behind me and (claws retracted) wraps one or both paws around my ankles as if to say, "Come back here! We're not done playing!"
I love that she rolls onto her back, looking absolutely adorable, and exposing her belly for me to gently rub!
Black is beautiful, and "Stupid-stitions" have no place in my world.
While Lola is a rescue kitty, I always tell people she rescued me with her love and friendship!
Perhaps you should take Lola to the vet. She sounds an awful lot like a dog.
Actually, many cats, expecially young ones are very playful. Like humans, when we get older we get more stodgy and reserved. We get that embarrassment thing.

Thank you for this hub and for taking in this lovely cat. We have two cats and one kitten, all found abandoned at different times in the last few years. They are a great addition to the family and get along with the house dogs as well. They do have their own personalities, just as any other pet.
